Thermal and License Plate Recognition Cameras
Two specialty cameras solve problems regular cameras handle badly. Thermal cameras pick up a person by body heat on a dark fence line, in fog or through dust. License plate recognition (LPR) cameras read plates at a gate or entrance and log every vehicle with a time stamp you can search.

Quick answer
When does a business need thermal or license plate cameras?
Thermal cameras detect a person by body heat on a dark fence line, in fog or through dust, but they cannot show who it is, so they are paired with a color camera. License plate recognition (LPR) cameras use a narrow view, fast shutter and infrared to read plates day and night. One LPR camera per lane gives the most reliable reads.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers for commercial buyers.
Can a thermal camera identify a person?
No. Thermal shows heat shapes, which is excellent for detecting that someone is there but not for recognizing who. That is why we pair thermal detection with a color camera or a bi-spectrum camera that captures both. Can any security camera read license plates?
Not reliably. A wide overview camera turns plates into a few blurry pixels, especially at night when headlights wash them out. LPR cameras use a narrow field of view, fast shutter and infrared so plates stay readable day and night. How many lanes can one LPR camera cover?
One lane per camera gives the most reliable reads. A wide two-lane entrance usually gets two cameras, aimed so each sees plates nearly straight on.Can the system alert us when a specific vehicle shows up?
Yes. Recorders that support LPR can keep allow-lists and alert lists. A listed plate can trigger a phone notification, and with an access control tie-in an approved plate can open the gate. Are there rules about recording license plates in Idaho?
Recording vehicles on your own business property is common practice. Posting signage and setting a retention period are sensible. If you have a specific legal question, check with your attorney.
